Frequently Asked Questions
All answers about our TIM & EMI shielding.
Criteria for TIM Selection?
The selection is based on five key factors: the min/max gap to be filled, the flatness of the contact surfaces, the required thermal conductivity (k-value), the hardness or compression ratio (to avoid mechanical stress on the PCB), and whether the material needs to be reworkable for maintenance purposes.
Pad, Gel/Putty, PCM, or Graphite?
-
The choice depends on your specific thermal path:
-
Thermal Pads: Best suited for large or uneven gap sizes.
-
Thermal Greases/Pastes: Ideal for extremely thin bond line thickness and minimal thermal resistance.
-
PCM (Phase Change Material): Offers performance like paste, but is as easy to handle during installation as a pad.
-
Graphite: Excellent heat spreading in the horizontal plane (2D) when vertical space is limited.
-
Custom Die-Cut Shapes & Adhesive?
Yes. We offer precision die-cutting for custom geometries. Additional options include pull-tabs for easy assembly, special markings, and roll packaging for automated production lines.
Shielding vs. EMC Absorbers?
EMC shielding (conductive gaskets/cans) works by reflecting or grounding electromagnetic energy to isolate interference. EMC absorbers (magnetic sheets) convert energy within specific frequency bands into a minimal amount of heat. Both technologies are often combined to achieve optimal EMC performance.
Metrics for EMC Effectiveness?
The key metric is Shielding Effectiveness (SE), measured in decibels (dB) over a specific frequency range. For mechanical gaskets, the required compression force for a good seal as well as the grounding impedance are also critical for long-term stability.
Environmental & Safety Standards?
All materials are RoHS and REACH compliant. We offer project-specific reliability tests (e.g., thermal aging and salt spray). Various UL 94 (fire protection) ratings are available for thermal pads.
Lead Time for Sample Parts?
Standard thermal pads and shielding materials can usually be shipped within 1–2 weeks. For custom die-cut parts, lead time depends on tooling complexity and material availability.
Pre-assembly on Heatsinks?
Yes. We offer kitting and sub-assembly services, applying thermal pads, pastes, or EMC gaskets directly onto your heatsinks or housings. This reduces assembly time and complexity in your production.
